Home Energy Audit & Retrofit Rebate Programs
Program
The Government of Ontario has created the Home Energy Savings Program. A Home Energy Audit shows homeowners how their home uses energy and where it is being leaked. It identifies improvements that can be made to a home’s heating, cooling, hot water heating and other energy uses that could result in hundreds of dollars in energy savings each year.
The Retrofit Rebate Program awards homeowners with rebates of up to $5,000 for home energy improvements. This matches the $5,000 available from the federal government — for a total of up to $10,000.Details
- The first energy audit of your Ontario home costs $350 + HST
- The Government of Ontario will pay 50% of your Home Energy Audit Inspection, up to $150.
- The Home Energy Audit will explain your home’s energy use from top to bottom.
- To arrange a Home Energy Audit, contact a licensed service organization to book an appointment for your energy assessment. Licensed Service Organizations can be found at: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/residential/personal/new-home-improvement/contact-advisors.cfm?attr=4
- A typical audit includes the following steps:
- A walk-through assessment of your home’s insulation, heating and cooling systems and other energy uses
- A “blower door” depressurization test to identify leaks and drafts
- A personalized Energy Efficiency Evaluation Report
- Your Energy Efficiency Evaluation Report will show you the most important changes to maximize your energy savings.
- After the initial audit, homeowners have 18 months to complete some or all of the improvements recommended by the energy advisor to qualify for government rebates. After completing the work, a post-retrofit audit must be arranged. The energy advisor will perform the audit and provide homeowner’s with their home’s new EnerGuide rating that shows the improvement in the home’s energy efficiency.
- Many of the energy-saving upgrades identified by your Home Energy Audit will qualify you for rebates under the Home Energy Retrofit Program. These rebates from the Government of Ontario combined with the Government of Canada’s ecoEnergy Program can reimburse you up to $10,000 when you complete improvements identified by your audit.
